An American oil-rig roughneck goes to Marseille, France, to visit his alienated girl, in jail for a homicide she guarantees she didn't commit. Faced with language boundaries, social contrasts and a confounded general set of laws, he before long forms another life for himself as he makes it his own central goal to excuse her.
